Hey my name is Jovana, and I’ve been attending a summer program called college now and EVC. We learn to be college ready and get a taste of the college lifestyle. We learn to create websites, take professional photos and videos, and we focus on important topics that impact us and our communities today. I learned to use high-tech cameras and video editing software that I had no idea about using before, and they’re actually pretty cool and fun to play around with. It isn’t so easy, putting music on top of videos, cutting and revising clips, and just putting it together overall. I love taking pictures and putting videos together, so I will definitely be putting the skills I learned to use on instagram and snapchat. Our group had to choose a topic that interested us most, and we all agreed on making our group project on youth violence so we could spread the message. We all had different tasks, and each brought something different to the table. Pedro worked on the design element of the site and the logo, while Angel and Cordell worked on the video portion, Toli, Amani, Sheila, Karen and me worked on the research and the ideas for a PSA to put at the end of the video. We all worked really well collabritavey and each contributed to making the site. Our group website and its focus on youth violence is significant to problems we all see today. Youth violence is something that we have all become too familiar with. It happens in our communities, on the streets, even in our schools. From working on this project, I've learned a lot. People have a lot of ideas on why they are violent and why they take violent actions, but there is not one answer for sure. As humans we are all born with instincts, and one is to be violent when needed. This is only to a certain extent. When we take out our anger on other people, it results in violence. We need this to stop. Children in America are not safe from violence, from street fight to school shootings. Violence is all around, and no child can be safe from it. Our goal is to raise awareness to how much violence really goes on among our youth. Until I took a look at the number, I really didn't realize how much youth violence goes on unnoticed. For example, according to cdc.gov, in 2018, 4,828 young people ages 10-24 were victims of homicide- an average of 13 a day. Homicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for young people ages 15-24 years old in America. There are so many websites and organizations to help stop youth violence such as youth.gov, who.int World Health Organization, cdc.gov Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and more, but our website is special because it’s made by youth and provides data, statistics, and why we want to put an end to youth violence.
